Kingfisher County
Description
Kingfisher County was created in 1890 following the run into The Unassigned Lands and the organization of Oklahoma Territory. A strip of land was later added to the western edge of the county after the land run of 1892. First known as County “Five,” it was later named to honor the town of Kingfisher, which had been settled overnight after the land run of April 22, 1889, and named for a settler who operated a trading station on the Chisholm Trail. Kingfisher County is home to the Famous Kingfisher Chisholm Trail Museum, named after the famous trader Jesse Chisholm and is the only museum in Oklahoma located directly on the Chisholm Trail. Kingsisher County is also home of Eischen’s Bar, the oldest bar in the state of Oklahoma and famous for it secret recipe fried chicken. Some noteworthy sons of Kingfisher in Kingfisher County are Sam Walton founder of WalMart and internationally known author and poet Don Blanding.

Kingfisher
Home to Kingfisher in Lights and the Famous Kingfisher Chisholm Trail Museum
Kingfisher’s museum is one of Oklahoma’s best! Named after the famous trader Jesse Chisholm, it’s the only museum in Oklahoma directly on the Chisholm Trail. The museum grounds boast a pioneer village of five original 1889 historic structures, one of which is a log cabin that was home to Adaline Dalton, mother of the notorious Dalton outlaw gang.
Some noteworthy sons and daughters of Kingfisher include the founder of Wal-Mart, Sam Walton; author and poet Don Blanding; W. C. Coleman, who formed the Hydro-Carbon Co., in Kingfisher, forerunner of the Coleman Company; T.G.&Y. founder, R. A. Young. Kingfisher Park features one of Oklahoma’s most incredible Christmas lights extravaganzas, Kingfisher in Lights. 75 displays with more than two million lights in late November thru December. Visitors may stroll across a beautifully lighted 1903 historic swinging bridge too. Train rides through the light displays are also a special part of Kingfisher in Lights.
Kingfisher was selected as a Channel 5 KOCO “On the Road” city, which means there is plenty of history in Kingfisher, and plenty to enjoy for every member of the family–an 18 hole golf course, a state-of-the-art aquatic center, museums, as well as plenty of eating establishments and some antique shops. Kingfisher Park is home to one of Oklahoma’s most incredible Christmas lights extravaganzas, Kingfisher in Lights. More than 75-plus displays are ablaze with more than two million lights from late November and all of December. One of the displays is a very special lighted tower “Stairway to Heaven,” a memorial to the victims of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
