Harper County

Description

Harper County, the most northwestern county, delights in the blending of old and new. With a history rich in ranching, rodeos & cattle drives; and the development of current lifestyle trends, the pioneer spirit continues into this new century. Celebrating the Oklahoma centennial in the “old” ways, as well as the “new,” Harper Countians share the fulfillment of our heritage.

Always rich in wildlife, the heritage wildlife trails combine enjoyable moments for birders, wildlife enthusiasts, and varied, scenic beauty. The museums in Buffalo and Laverne display local and area historical information.

Several area hunting guides are available for the plentiful deer, quail, turkey and dove hunters. Rosston and Selman claim having both the guides and the wildlife for the avid hunters and photographers.

The great western cattle drive trail ran through the community of May as it herded from Texas to Dodge City. Another trail, the Ft. Dodge — Camp Supply Trail, extended from Ft. Supply site through the Brule townsite, now Buffalo. Ruts from that trail are still visible in the northwest part of the county.

Both Buffalo and Laverne boast of their 9 hole golf courses, with grass greens, sand and water traps. The Doby springs recreational area between Buffalo and Laverne is one of the original townsites in the county. With spring water and wooded trails, this site is perfect for star gazers (with a dark sky designation), campers and day trippers. Adjacent to the park is Buffalo’s challenging Doby Springs golf course.

In the valley of the Beaver River, visitors are surprised by these wonderful, tree shaded communities in the often treeless short-grass prairie of northwest Oklahoma. It’s a great place to visit, and stay awhile!
