“Ghost Town” of Jefferson
Jefferson began as Pond, and had a post office well before this area was opened for settlement by the Land Run in 1893. The following year, Jefferson proper was established after present-day Pond Creek abandoned this site for a new one three miles to the south. Major floods of the nearby creeks finally drove off all businesses, and, except for several homes and a church or so, Jefferson is now a picturesque Ghost Town south of Medford.

Wakita
Part of the Twister Movie Was Filmed Here!
When in Wakita, Oklahoma, there is one attraction that is a must-see. In fact, it’s one of the more unusual attractions in Oklahoma. Wakita is home to the Twister Museum. The Twister Movie Museum is located in the heart of this small farming community — Wakita is one of the locations where the movie Twister was shot (in fact a sequel is in the planning stages now, we hear). The Museum is open daily, 1-5, April through September, closed Sundays, Mondays and Holidays. The Museum is in its eleventh year of operation.
Did you see the movie Twister? If so, you were bound to be impressed with the devastation that the movie’s F-4 tornado caused the little town of Wakita. Did they really do that to the town? The Twister Museum is a fascinating glimpse into the film-making art, and the extent to which the crew must go to ensure the greatest possible effect. A visit to the Museum provides a first-hand feel for the adventures that happened in this small town for a summer. Even if it isn’t “on the way,” the Twister Museum is worth a look!
