Arnett
Arnett dates back to territorial days, the post office established in 1902. The Arnett area is a favorite with state hunters. Some of the larger ranches in the region are private wildlife refuges, stocked with quail, turkeys, prairie chickens, deer and buffalo. One of the most picturesque ranching areas in the state is Antelope Hills, six conspicuous peaks rising from a plain inside a bend of the Canadian River. Don’t miss Grand, about two miles off U.S. 283 and 13 miles south of Arnett, it’s one of Oklahoma’s most celebrated ghost towns.
Gage
Gage is perhaps one of the best known towns in Oklahoma. It’s very small, but it provides vital weather information and navigational guidance 24/7. It’s also home to Oklahoma’s “largest outdoor swimming pool.” Adjacent to the pool, is a clear, spring-fed lake that’s about the size of five football fields. It’s truly a delight in spring and summer. Try your hand at trout fishing in the winter (stocked in the lake).
Shattuck
Shattuck, the largest city in Ellis County is a commercial hub, with a strong Chamber of Commerce comprised of over 100 businesses and organizations. The well-maintained City Golf Course is a favorite for area corporate tournaments and features a weekly open scramble. Centrally located City Park has all new playground equipment, a large public pool, tennis courts and picnic facilities! Enjoy a Nature Walk or jog at the mile-long Lighted Walking Trail at Centennial Lake. The lake is heavily stocked with trout, and the Fishing Derby is always a hit.
The Stuart Memorial Building (listed on the National Historic Register) houses the Shattuck Public Library. Inside the enormous brick structure, wall murals depict the history of Shattuck from 1838 to present.
Shattuck’s legendary Newman Memorial Hospital (est. 1907) serves a tri-state region! The life and legacy of founding pioneer physician, O.C. Newman is detailed in the popular novel “Hang on to the Willows”. In 2010, Newman Memorial began a 5 million dollar renovation and introduced Telemedicine to the area!
Seven miles east of Shattuck is “Gage Beach” (Oklahoma’s Largest Outdoor Swimming Pool). The artesian waters of the 100-year-old spring-fed pool are rich in therapeutic minerals.
Shattuck is north of the picturesque Antelope Hills, and situated between the Canadian River and Wolf Creek. The area is a Hunter’s Paradise with an abundance of Quail, Turkey, and Deer. Shattuck is home to a variety of restaurants, charming guest houses, and multiple RV parks.

Shattuck Windmill Museum
If stories of early life out here on the prairie call your name, you just must come see Shattuck Windmill Museum & Park. What began as a fundraiser, “Somewhere Out West”, in 1994 and the raising of four windmills in the park, our fervor has now rolled into 53 vintage mills dating from 1854 to the present, one reconstructed half-dugout, a wind generator, two early drilling rigs and an early story-and-a-half farmhouse. It’s been a breathless run.
